An anthropological introduction to YouTube work

Youtubes big numbers : 3 networks x 60 years x 365 dayz a year x 24 hours a day = over 1.5 million hours of pragramming , but youtube produced more in the the last 6 months . this is done because youtube has 9232 hours of programming uploaded a day which is the equvilent to 385 alwayz on tv channals or 200,000 2 minute vids and 88% of the content coming through is new and original content.

Numa Numa and the Celebration of Webcams : Numa Numa traveled across theworld and was one of the first vids to be remade by a normal person using a webcam and just singing along to the song. this starts a new craze were evry1 uses and celabrates webcams.

The Machine is Us/ing Us and the New Mediascape: this part of the vid talks about web 2.0 and the new internet. how this new internet has allowed us to put up user generated content and do user generated distrbution over the internet. we are the new mediascape and when media changes we change.

Introducing our Research Team: he has 10 under graduate students as his research team and evry spring they launch into a study of youtube each spring.

Who is on YouTube? : 25% of poeple on youtube are over 35 and teenagers around the age of 17 , 12% are under teens and 52% are between 18 and 35.

What's on Youtube? Charlie Bit My Finger, Soulja Boy, etc. : the most commanly uploaded vid on youtube was home vids. if the vid was a sucess people will emitate them. soulja boy uploaded his song and made a dance to it and was a huge sucess due to youtube and user distribution.

17:04 5% of vids are personal vlogs addressed to the YouTube community, Why? :because of the loss of comunity over time

17:30 YouTube in context. The loss of community and "networked individualism" (Wellman) : From place to place from person to person conectivity, by more people working and alot of other factors contributing to loss of the community

18:41 Cultural Inversion: individualism and community: networked inddividualism where were poeple express indiviualy but at the same time value the online community.

19:15 Understanding new forms of community through Participant Observation: we can understand new form of community such as online networks by doing participant oberservation by getitn involved in the communitys.

21:18 YouTube as a medium for community : youtube is used as a medium through webcams and people can talk to a webcam and not know who is goin to talk back and when or where they are going to be watched which makes youtbe a medium for the community

23:00 Our first vlogs: people all seem to be stuggling with their first vlogs as they did not know what to talk about and also felt like they were talking to themselves.

The webcam: Everybody is watching where nobody is ("context collapse") : this is where u feel as if you are in your most private place such as your bedroom but in fact your in the most public place such as the online community

26:05 Re-cognition and new forms of self-awareness (McLuhan): this is basikly poeple recording themselves and then later on in life being able to look back on the vid and see what they were like back then.

27:58 The Anonymity of Watching YouTube: Haters and Lovers : anoymity + physical distance + rare & ephemeral dialouge = hatred as public performance. which at the same time allows pepople the freedom to experience humanity without fear or anxeity.

29:53 Aesthetic Arrest : this is basically experiencing someone through youtube and getting a deep connection with them without actually meeting them in person

30:25 Connection without Constraint: youtube offfers the posibillity of connection without constraint which is basically having a deep relationship with someone through youtube and not having the responsabilitys you would have in the real world.

32:35 Free Hugs: A hero for our mediated culture: This was a guy who came to the U.K by himself and decided to hold up a free hugs sign to get a hug from people and bring poeple closer together and then posted it on youtube, this was a huge sucess as he got over 5 million veiws world wide and people all over the world started to do free hugs.

34:02 YouTube Drama: Striving for popularity: this is the fight to be the most popular person or have the most popular vid on youtube and this is very hard to do with 200,000 vids going up on youtube evryday.

34:55 An early star: emokid21ohio: this was a kid from ohio that posted up vlogs of himself and ended up on a love story with a girl on youtube and alot of people tuned into this and was very popular on youtube.

36:55 YouTube's Anthenticity Crisis: the story of LonelyGirl15: this was a anthenticity crisis where people really belived a girl and evryfing she said until it was revealed that she was fake and planned, this caused alot of poeple to be annoyed as people say youtube is only for real things and not fake stuff

39:50 Reflections on Authenticity: people are able to hide their identitys on youtube and pretend to be somthing they are not and choose to be authentic or not to be.

41:54 Gaming the system / Exposing the System: lol this is about poeple cheating the system and basically each other by puttin some sort or sexy girl or symbol in the middle of their vid so that when people see it they will be attracted to it not realising the true story behind the vid therfore the creator getting more veiws

43:37 Seriously Playful Participatory Media Culture: this is just people being freindly through youtube and through comedy on youtube to basically remake other vids or songs with their own ideas and putting it bacj onto youtube trying to make the content even better.

47:32 Networked Production: The Collab. MadV's "The Message" and the message of YouTube: this is about an annomous youtube user who has told people to make a simple statement on their hand and show the world and as a results has become the most responded to vid in the history of youtube.

49:29 Poem: The Little Glass Dot, The Eyes of the World: this is a poem about the whole world and the professor himself remade this poem to be about youtube and all of us about being an online copmmunity.

51:15 Conclusion by bnessel1973: this is a simple person on youtube making his own statement about youtube but sums up and concludes youtube in his own and our own words so this is why the professor shows this at the end of his vid to conclude his introduction to youtube.

Web 2.0 is a term describing changing trends in the use of World Wide Web technology and web design that aims to enhance creativity, information sharing, collaboration and functionality of the web. Web 2.0 concepts have led to the development and evolution of web-based communities and its hosted services, such as social-networking sites, video sharing sites,
wikis, blogs. Although the term suggests a new version of the World Wide Web, it does not refer to an update to any technical specifications, but to changes in the ways software developers and end-users utilize the Web.
