Easter homework

Media Audiences: What techniques does the opening sequence use to appeal to a weekday mainstream audience? -
I think this text trails away from the normal standard shows where the opening sequence is through the title and introduction of the character with a theme song in the background. In this text the audience is thrown into into the story straight away with the scene of a house being spied upon and a short sequence of the camara shaking and in a fast motion moving towards and throught the house to the first character, by using this they were able to show who was being spied upon in an entertaining and engaging way. I think binary oppositions is also used as we are intorduced to a happy couple and what seems to be a disturbed couple who envy and dispise the happy couple and even the way the two couples intereact shows the oppositions.

Media Institutions: What does this text tell us about the media institutions involved?
This tell us the media institution involved in this case which is BBC try to target specific audiences with this type of text. From the opening sequence we can see that this is an adult drama from the serious tension and build up created. From what i already know about the BBC they were made and started up to inform and educate the british audiences. To this day the BBC try to do this with the wide range range of programs they show and in this wide range they have action/thriller drama. This is were this text is used to inform the British audience.

Media Forms: How does the extract follow the codes and convention of an opening sequence?
In some respects this does not follow the conventional opening sequence most dramas have as it starts of into the story and shows the title sequence after this to give the audience a little insight into the episodes. in other aspects such as biuld up of tenstion is does follow the normal codes and conventions as we expect to see this in action drama's. also the enigma codes are created by the non diegetic music and the fact that there is a girl at the beginning. there is a child playing which is then followed a woman conducting normal everyday life chores. the sequence also uses high key lighting in the opening to the situation that is occuring.

Media Representation: How are people and places represented in this opening sequence?
I think the places used in the opening sequences were represented in a negative way as the colours thath where shown were dull and lifeless. I think binary oppositions is also used and this represents the people in the drama, as we are intorduced to a happy couple and what seems to be a disturbed couple who envy and dispise the happy couple and even the way the two couples intereact shows the oppositions. by using normal characters adds to the realism of the storyline. for example having a girl at the beginning skipping is what you expect from the small school girl. furthermore by the woman doing chores is like a everyday thing you expect. most of the action occurs in the home which also allows the audience to interact with the characters as well as what is hapenning in the sequence.

Adulthood questions

The clip i looked at was part 11 and the first 2 mins of the clip

The dialogue is keeping the audiences drawn in as it is keeping to the main and most important part of the story line, the build up of tension also keep the audiences on their toes.

There is tense music playing in the background adding to the suspense of the scene.
The final confrontation could connote that their is always another way to end a fight but i think the real meaning was to show the real emotion behind the main protagonist.
It is very significant as during this scene half the face of each character is blacked out and we are exposed the characters injurys.

The dominant images are of the two characters during their confrontation.
They have assumed the audience wanted to see a happy ending.
Tense and have mixed emotions about both characters during this sequence.
The text delivers the action and drama its genre set out for it and this is shown in the end sequence.
I evaluate this texts as a good media text as it really appeals to my age group but comapared to the 1st film film a bit of a dissapointment.
The target audience is teenager and young adults. The characters are teenagers and young adults themselves helping to relate to the genre. This text isfrom the action/drama genre.

It is using violence and swearing and this is expected of this genre.

They are fulfulled as all the elements of this scene relates to the genre and the expected violence is there.
Violence and revenge seem to be the major generic themes.
The protagonist is being represented as a lost teenage figure.
The emotional termoil a teenager from the london "gheeto" has to face.
The Protagonist is represented in this way because this is what audiences want to see and therefore they are not dissapointed.
The major steroetype made in the text is that all teenagers from london speak in slang and this representation is not accurate.

Fabolous - so into you

This starts of with close shots of both the artist and a girl who we asume to be the "Princess" of this video if we relate back to propp's narrative theory. This shows us that the artist is singing or "rapping" this song to her. also we see flashes which might indicate that the video is going into a flashback.

Next we also see shots of the "princess" constantly moving away from the camera and this creates the feeling that the artist is chasing her or relating to the title of the song, he could be trying to tell her he is into her.

The girl is represented as a model as she is shown in most shots just posing, also she is shown wearing revealing clothes and this could have been done to draw in the opposite sex also maybe even challanging male dominance.

The artist is represented as cool, calm and collected and is shown as a rich dominant male relaxing on his personal boat. not only does this show he is rich it also represents male dominance.

The video then goes into a flashback and start to show the artists roots, in this he is shown gambling on the streets with his mates, we also see the girl walking past this and shows that there is history between the two and also represents the poor society as before even this rich artist had to resort to gambling to make money

Bullet boy codes and conventions

Narrative - the narrative of Bullet boy is shown in a very basic manner through voice overs and texts shown throughout the trailer to back up and go with the voice overs.
The narrative moment in the trailer in my veiw was the words "one shot" displayed and ashely walters shown with a gun to go with the text.
The trailer shows that the film uses Propp's theory as you can identify ashley walters as the hero, his lover to be the princess, his mum to be the doner,
his freind to be the helper and the police to be the villians.
They also have used binarry opposition in the trailer by showing a child with a gun in several scenes.

Setting - This film is set in London and this can be seen through the scenes during the trailer , also during the trailer they show the awards won or nominated for the film and the awards are British.

Characters - all characters in the trailers are shown in tense scences and no characters is shown in any shape or form happy or with nothing to worry about.
ashley walters is clearly shown as the main character as most the trailer is revolved around him and his fight against avoiding the police.
Other chracter roles in the film arent shown as of more importance as ashley walters although the child shown with the gun really gets the audiences attention as this is something nobody wants to see.

Iconnography - In the trailer I think the gun is used to link to the title of the film "bullet boy". The gun is clearly a major factor in the film and the trailers revolves around this and the tittle suggests so does the film.

Superbad mest 1 analysis

Media forms -This text is a american teen comedy which relates to all the teenage swearing in the scene. the sub genre is high school cteenage comedy and is closley associated with the american hit teenage comedy film american pie.
In this scene of superbad it shows a flashback to seths childhood were his life was changed becuase he was caught drawing penis's and was acused of being possesed by the dick devil.

This scene is set in a school and all characters in the scene are children. narrative moments in the scene would be were he is caught drawing these pictures as this relates to the title of being "Superbad".
In the scene we can see how Propps theory applies to the text as Seth is the hero trying to impress the Princess of the film who he is trying to get and the villian would be the teacher getting him into trouble. levi struas's binary oppositions also applies as the hero seth is caught drawing penis's and that is seen as a bad and corrupt thing.

In the scene children are represented as very imature and this is shown in the clip where the girl is showing screaming becuase she sees the drawings.
The film is shown as a male dominated film as all the lead characters roles are given to male characters and women are just seen as objects in the film this is shown in the clip where the attention is focused on seth and not female roles in the scene. this scene also relates to audience appeals as the need to belong to a group is very apparent in this text, this is shown in the scene where the hero is trying to impress the princess by doing something stupid.

Harry potter trailer questions

1. What aspects of the film are emphasised in the trailer? Why do you think this is?

The main sapect of this trailer amphasised in my veiw is the narrative of this sequel. also to make people aware of the release date of the film . this is shown in the trailer as non diegetic sound (voice overs) from different character makes the narrative very clear and sets up the film. Promoting the film is done through the showing of the date of release .

2. How is the genre of the film established in the film frailer? (refer to the mise-en-scene including editing and sound in addition to visual/symbolic/written iconographies).

I think the main way the genre of the film is shown is through the fast moving trailer in general. This fast moving trailer trailer shows there is action in the film. Another big factor that adds to the genre is the costumes as they are all dressed "wizardary" clothes and are shown flying around on broomsticks.

3. From the information you see/hearon screen only (and not from prior knowledge) who are the target audience of this film and how do you know?

The target audience at first glance seem to be teenagers as the main actors are teenagers themselves and the whole film is based on magic and wizardary and is not normally associated with anyone older than teenagers.

4. How does the trailer show that this film is worth coming to see?

The film trailer through its high graphic and intense scences automatically makes the audience want to come and see the film.

5. Harry Potter & The Order of The Phoenix is obviously a sequal. The trailer must ensure the potential audience can understand the film even if they haven't seen the first one. How does it do this?

Through the main characters voice over during the trailers the narrative is clear and sets up this film for another adventure. As this is a sequel the makers had to make the narrative very clear and do this very well by showing scences of darkness and throw in a glimpse of romance which has not been efore in harry potter films.

6. Trailers are not 'mini-films'. They are a genre in their own right and have their own set of easily recognisable conventions. List the conventions of film trailers - you should be looking at a list of at least 5 points and up to 10! (1 or 2 is NOT enough).

1. Wizards

2. People flying around

3. Magic

4. Romance (expected in teen films)

5. Conflict

Hero analysis

In this analysis I will be using migrain analysis technique which includes media language, institution, genre, representation, audience, and narrative. In the opening scene of heroes we can see the hero’s logo (which is represented through and eclipse) and the episode name. The episode name is then very cleverly inserted into the actual prop of the scene. This makes the reader think about the episode name more.

Then we are introduced to our first character who we can only assume is a “hero” as he has powers, and this character I think is represented in a stereotypical way as the Japanese character is shown to have high energy and running around making a lot of noise. Then we are introduced the Indian character who is represented with an accent and with a calm attitude. After we are introduced to our American character that is represented as a stripper and low self respect.

The whole opening sequence is all run through with dark dull colours to create a certain mood. From here we are taken into our main protagonist’s vision where he is flying and here the use of slow non digenetic sound and slow camera movements from a bird-eye view create a calm peaceful mood. In my view I think this whole first episode was targeted and aimed at showing and getting across the image that anyone can be a hero and they have done this through showing people from different backgrounds and ethnicity with super powers.

Then we are introduced the Indian character who is represented with an accent and with a calm attitude. After we are introduced to our American character that is represented as a stripper and low self respect. The narrative is introduced through a narrator in the beginning and the font used in the episode is the same as used in comic books maybe to show there is a link between this and a comic.
